Straight Talk Prepaid Cell Phone

I was getting a little tired of my Verizon cell phone plan. Two phones for $69.99 with 700 shared minutes and unlimited mobile to mobile. Problem is the bill was over $86 after the added Verizon and government surcharges/taxes. That's a lousy deal in anyone's book. I decided to try prepaid since I hate contracts. When I spoke with Verizon they just wanted me to sign up for two years to get a new phone etc. No thanks!

My new phone is a Samsung R451C running on Straight Talk. The service is surprisingly good and is said to run on the Verizon network. Straight Talk has an unlimited plan for $45 but the $30 plan more than enough for me. For $30, you get 1000 minutes, 1000 texts, and 30MB of data. The phone and service is fine but forget about the web features. Straight Talk disables Java on the phone and doesn't support apps or games. Do yourself a favor and buy a cheaper phone.

I am disappointed that Straight Talk crippled the phone. I was looking forward to writing my own apps and trying about mobile web development.

Brian, nice post. The one thing I'd add in terms of recommending that people switch to prepaid is that before someone makes the change, they should figure out first whether they can reduce their current cell bills down to acceptable levels--thereby saving often significant "early termination fees" (assuming your contract had not expired yet). Not to blatantly plug, but as an example of how to effectively cut your wireless costs, I'll mention that I work in the consumer advocacy division of the Houston-based company Validas, where we electronically audit and subsequently reduce the average cell bill by around 22 percent, or about $450 annually, through our website, . From regular people like you and me to huge entities like the State of California, an incredibly varied group of wireless customers uses Validas to slash their wireless bills. Validas works, and it can probably work for you.

My cell phone contract had ended long ago. My "friends" at Verizon kept calling trying to talk us into a 2 year deal for little to no saving. They were shameless! I would repeat their offer and just say "why would a reasonable person even consider this?" Once the girl admitted it was a terrible offer. Wake up Verizon ... or should I say, "Can you hear me now?"

I'm happy with Straight Talk for now and my wife is using a T-Mobile 10 cents/minute plan and very happy. She never breaks 100 minutes a month so it's perfect for her. Verizon is worth a premium but nothing like they're charging these days.

Validas, according to their own website, boasts a list of "supported carriers," which doesn't include Straight Talk, TracFone, NET10 and others.

Caveat emptor. Let the buyer beware.

I also got sick of people trying to sign me up for another 2 year contract. Why should I sign when the pre paid deals are getting cheaper all the time. I got the Straight TAlk $ 30 deal which gives me all the air time I need, with great coverage.
